DLeNM and La Cosecha Conference Solidarity Statement
Dual Language Education of New Mexico and La Cosecha Conference are committed to ensuring that all conference attendees have a safe, positive, and enriching experience while in Albuquerque for this year’s conference. Under the leadership of Mayor Tim Keller and in solidarity with organizations like El Centro de Igualdad y Derechos and Somos Un Pueblo Unido, Albuquerque affirms its identity as a sanctuary and immigrant-friendly city. In July 2025, Mayor Keller issued an Executive Order reaffirming Albuquerque’s long-standing commitment to protect the rights and dignity of immigrant and refugee communities, including due process protections, limiting city cooperation with federal immigration enforcement unless required by law, and enhancing transparency and accountability across city departments. https://www.cabq.gov/mayor/news/mayor-keller-issues-executive-order-to-protect-immigrant-rights-in-albuquerque-city-councilors-plan-legislation-to-further-codify-immigrant-protections
These steps build on the City’s earlier Immigrant-Friendly Resolution (R-18-7), which ensures that residents are not required to disclose immigration status in City settings, and seeks to protect access to services and safety for all people, regardless of documentation. https://www.kunm.org/local-news/2025-08-26/albuquerque-mayor-immigrant-protections-federal-threats
We are grateful for the City's courageous leadership in safeguarding our (im)migrant relatives, preserving family unity, and fostering a community where every person can enjoy the full protection of their human rights and live without fear. As an organization that prioritized equity and community-centered voices, and works toward providing our children with an inclusive, culturally and linguistically responsive education, we believe that the diverse cultures, languages, and traditions of our families strengthen our city. They contribute daily through their work, traditions, and leadership, and enrich the lives of all who call Albuquerque home. At a time when many community members face discrimination and uncertainty, we stand together to ensure that Albuquerque remains a place of refuge, belonging, and opportunity.
